PLAY Roanoke announced the formation of Roanoke Parks Foundation, dedicated to supporting the City of Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department.
This no–for-profit organization will work with donors, volunteers and leaders in the community towards improving the quality of life for all Roanoke residents and visitors. The Foundation will raise funds, accept donations and provide resources to improve programs, services, facilities and Technology.
“Only 2% of the overall city budget is allocated to Parks and recreation department,
which doesn’t leave much wiggle room with maintaining the long list of assets we manage”, explains Patrick Boas, leisure manager. Throughout the course of the pandemic, Parks and Recreation facilities have seen a dramatic increase in usthe age that exceeded the department’s budget. Funding provided by Roanoke Parks Foundation will be allocated to projects worth nearly $80 million identified in the last master plan.
“Speaking with the newly formed foundation, it was noted that for the city 100,000 inhabitants, the budget is the equivalent of the individual tariff of approximately $60 per year or $5 a month,” Boas added. “Most people spend more than that on a gym membership, so why not find a way to give back to the many peersk spaces we are right in front of our door?
The City of Roanoke Parks and Recreation Department is a–services, nationwide
accredited municipal agency that maintains nearly 14,000 acres of public land and
provides the Roanoke Valley with two thousand recreational opportunitiesunits each year.
With 60 parks, over 90 miles of greenways and trails, five places, two outdoors
swimming pools and seven recreation centers, Roanoke Parks and Recreation currently
employees 69 full–full-time employees and about 150–time and seasonall the employees.
