NHL confirms plans for Lake Tahoe outdoor games in February

The NHL on Monday made official its intention to play two regular-season outdoor games in Lake Tahoe this season, announcing details of the two-day event and two outdoor NHL games.

The Colorado Avalanche will face the Vegas Golden Knights on February 20 for Bridgestone NHL Outdoors on Saturday, followed by Honda NHL Outdoors on Sunday February 21 – a game that will see the Philadelphia Flyers take on the Boston Bruins. The face-off for both games will take place at 3 p.m. ET, with the south shore of Lake Tahoe, North America’s largest alpine lake, as the backdrop at Edgewood Tahoe Resort.

Lake Tahoe is located on the border of California and Nevada. Neither game will include fans in attendance.

NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman noted in the league’s press release Monday that the unique challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic played a role in choosing Lake Tahoe as the location, as earlier ideas from putting an outdoor match in an off-stadium setting was not possible due to the logistics of fan participation.

“We are delighted to announce the NHL Outdoors in Lake Tahoe and look forward to being on site for what will no doubt be two exciting games in a breathtaking setting,” said Bettman. “Since we started hosting outdoor matches in 2003 and made it a regular part of our annual program in 2008, we have considered a myriad of off-stadium settings, but they have always been made impractical due to the considerable volume of demand from our fans to attend.

“This season, unable to accommodate our usual huge crowds at such events, we will continue our tradition of bringing the game and our players back to their outdoor roots when the Avalanche meets the Golden Knights and the Bruins take on the Flyers in outdoors. ice rink at the spectacular Edgewood Tahoe Resort. “

In keeping with the tradition of NHL outdoor games, these two games will be the 31st and 32nd outdoor NHL games staged since the first in 2003.

All four teams involved will be wearing their recently unveiled Reverse Retro jerseys, released in November.

The Lake Tahoe event will be the first outdoor game for the Golden Knights. It will be the third for the Avalanche, the fourth for the Bruins and the fifth time for the Flyers.
