ESCANABA — First-graders from Lemmer Elementary took a field trip to DNR Pocket Part on Thursday as part of their Camp Skeeter program. Camp Skeeter has been an annual event in Upper Peninsula school districts for several years, mimicking daytime camping activities, such as archery, picnics, and fishing. Once back in their classrooms, students opened their parents’ letters home before writing letters to send back.
Volunteer members of the Federation of Turkey, a non-profit organization, joined the students at the park to explain their work in the community and demonstrate the safe use of pellet guns.
The students met a surprise guest, Smokey the Bear, near the end of their trip to the park.
